Goldfoot, JoyTribe at The Secret Society

January 14, 2017, 9:00pm - January 15, 2017, 2:00am

Goldfoot, JoyTribe at The Secret Society! 9pm Joytribe 10:30 Goldfoot $10 -Goldfoot- Goldfoot fuses musical elements from the past, present, and future with good vibes and dance beats. Their super-fresh single, “Feel Like Dancin” embodies that fusion with a myriad of groove and a heart full of soul. It’s a sweet dose of funk that targets the booty and alleviates your non-dance symptoms. With two EPs and a high-energy live show, Goldfoot orchestrates an ever-changing dance party for their fans and fellow dancers. The Goldfoot groove materialized during a jam session in late 2013 when Trevor Forbess (vocals/guitar), Joe McClain (guitar/samples), and Elijah Medina (bass/vocals) joined forces in an old dusty woodshop in SE Portland. The trio recorded The Goldfoot EP (2014) before Ruth Heald added percussion and vocals to the band. 2015 brought the release of Goldfoot’s second EP along with a music video for the title track, “On the Floor.” -JoyTribe- Formed by Singer/Saxophonist, Chelsea Luker, in collaboration with Rick Bouvette- bass, Eric Hickey- guitar, Keith Abbott- drums, Gil Assayas-keys and Katie Presley-trumpet, JoyTribe is a passionate fusion of Pretenders inspired vocals meets Prince and Pink Floyd's psychedelic funk child. Chelsea initiated JoyTribe with the goal of making genre splitting fusion in a democratic writing situation. After 5 years with Mars Retrieval Unit, and a little break in Thailand, she took time searching for the right fit of musicians. Once she reacquainted with former MRU bassist Rick B., everything fell into place. Initially imagining a mix of electronic, prog and funk, the music made up it's own mind to veer towards world inspired funk. Songs lean heavily on reggae, latin and african elements, paired with vintage rock vibes. This is due to Eric's study of latin percussion and flamenco, Rick's love of Reggae, and Keith's strong connection to classic bands like Pink Floyd. With the recent addition of Electro Looping guru, Gil Assayas of Glasys, and March Fourth Marching Band's Katie Presley on trumpet, the vibe can go anywhere during a show. The mood of the band is intense and sometimes shy, a little silliness bursts through, but there is a very strong sense of passion, focus and love during live performances. JoyTribe has been performing around the NW for over two years now, opening for international touring acts such as Balkan Beat Box, Dumpstafunk and Kung FU. They recently finished a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund their first EP featuring original songs and one adapted cover. "We Insist" will be released on Feb 24th.

Thursday Swing! Featuring The Jenny Finn Orchestra, Birch Pereira & the Gin Joints at The Secret Society

November 10, 2016, 6:00pm - November 10, 2016, 11:00pm

Thursday Swing! Featuring The Jenny Finn Orchestra, Birch Pereira & the Gin Joints at The Secret Society Birch Pereira & the Gin Joints Born out of a love of the early years of swing, country and rock & roll, Birch Pereira & the Gin Joints is a band whose sound transports you to the time of speakeasies, honky-tonks and rock & roll joints. With upright bassist and vocalist Birch Pereira at its center, the band features many of Seattle's most skilled and versatile musicians who share the love of the American song traditions and a desire to offer a fresh angle on them. The band itself plays in a variety of formats from intimate duo or trio gigs to dance gigs as a larger ensemble and features a revolving cast of professional, Golden Ear nominated, Seattle musicians, including Jason Goessl (guitar), Adrian Van Batenburg (drums), Jacob Zimmerman (clarinet), Tim Kennedy (Wurlitzer), David Bush (drums), Sam Esecson (drums), Daniel Rainard (guitar) and Kate Voss (vocals). Birch Pereira & the Gin Joints released their debut album Dream Man on May 12th and continue to support the release with performances around the West and East Coast. The Jenny Finn Orchestra The Jenny Finn Orchestra hails from the soggy burg of Portland, Oregon. When Ain't Misbehavin', the band plays vintage swing jazz of the 1920's-1940's in string orchestra format. Conductor Twayn Williams leads the band on guitar with driving Gypsy Swing rhythms. Hank Hadeed brings his bebop, jazz and blues influence to the mix, adding color and finger-burning solos. We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye to talented and classically trained Megan Moran on violin, who has temporarily relocated to Boston, but she'll be back before we know it. In the meantime, it's just Too Darn Hot when we invite other local talents to complete the sextet. The icing on this tasty cake is the vocal performances of Carrie Baldwin-Sayre and Janet Lindsley. Doctor-in-the-house Carrie fronts the band with extensive experience in theater and dance. She brings double the fun - she can sing and sew up our wounds when needed. Operatically trained and accordion-slinging Janet sings and adds sweet and spooky vocal harmonies. Well over Five Foot Two with eyes of blue is James "J'attendrai" Delaney, rounding out the sound on the upright bass. This sextet swings Night and Day in venues in Portland and beyond.
